SBU iGEM Team Wins Gold Medal at 2025 Competition!

Stony Brook University’s undergraduate iGEM team earned a Gold Medal at the 2025 international competition in Paris, marking the program’s fourth gold medal and another strong year for SBU synthetic biology. The project introduced an innovative Cas13a-based approach for targeting HIV-infected cells, earning recognition for both scientific creativity and technical execution.

The team was co-advised by Laufer Center faculty member Prof. Gábor Balázsi, together with Professors Peter Gergen and Kathryn Gunn from the Biochemistry & Cell Biology Department of Stony Brook University.
